who4.4 Maintain student safety:
Describe strategies that support students’ well being and safety working within school and/or system, curriculum and legislative requirements.
Evidence 1:
Student well being and safety is not only a curriculum and legislative requirement, it is something I feel very strongly towards. During my teaching placements I have been conscious of my duty of care being a supervisor of children and knowing I have teaching duties such as lunch, bus, recess, before and after school duties. I am up to date with mandatory skills and will always seek out information about all students allergies and other conditions that may require medical intervention.
Having a current First Aid Certificate and having a nursing background I have the ability to understand medical terminology and instructions. At times I have had to administer things such as band aids, ice treatment for sprains and sent students to the front office if further care was required.
It is also important to be aware of unknown adults entering the school yard and who students are leaving with. During my placement at Nowra Hill Public School on the 17th September 2015 I was involved in my first lock down procedure and was given full support and supervision while undertaking this procedure. Since then I have become more conscious of what can happen during the school day and I am more prepared to keep my students safe and secure at all times while I am on duty.

Throughout my career in the context of disabilities and aged care I have always and within my pre service teaching requirements put the health and well being of my students first and foremost. Without a safe learning environment as a base, effective teaching and learning in my opinion is impossible. Student safety must be always considered within many forms including physical as well and mental and emotional safety. Risks these days vary from student to students and can come in many forms, whether it be in the form of bullying from other students, physical dangers from their environment or even the possibility of emotional damage from an negative learning environment. As a teacher, being aware of WHS issues, school policies, procedures and resources as well as maintaining a high level of vigilance for all students' safety at all times is paramount and a requirement of your position as a teacher.
Below are the NSW Board of Education requirements for teachers for the well being and safety of all students that I have completed. I have also completed module 1 of the Child Protection face to face (PD) and only have the online modules to now complete.
